Culture And Class In The Transition To Adulthood Of Youth With Medical Conditions Essay, Research Paper

Carrie Saetermoe, PI

Requirements for Credit Participation

In order to clarify the expectations of researchers on this project and to make it easier for you to know your grade status, we have established specific criteria for graded participation in our project. Thank you very much for your cooperation with this policy.

For each unit of Psychology 498 or 499 that you take, you must engage in 45 hours of project participation. In order to get credit for your hours, you must complete a time sheet every other Friday of the semester. If you are more than 2 weeks late, you will not receive credit for your hours. I apologize if this seems harsh. I have had great difficulty in assigning fair grades to those of you who do not let me know about all of the good work that you’re doing! THANKS! Notices will be posted in the lab about due dates and time sheets will be made available outside of the lab.

At the end of the semester, students are required to turn in a summary activity sheet. This will let us know what you’ve been doing and permit me to assign fair grades.

Students can participate in several activities. Really rough estimates of the time each activity takes are noted.

Rules for participation:

1.Any activity related to the project counts – home visits, transcriptions, double-checking, meetings, preparation for conferences and papers, reading, data entry, etc. You may count up to one hour for travel to a home visit, but no more than one hour.

2.Students must go on at least one home visit each semester unless arrangements have been made directly with Carrie before the middle of the semester (7th week). Home visits are estimated to take approximately 8-10 hours.

3.Students must transcribe at least one audiotape and one double-checking must be completed each semester. Transcription of Spanish tapes is estimated to take approximately 14 hours, English tapes, 7-9 hours. Double-checking should take approximately 1-2 hours.

There are many other activities in the lab. Please see Desiree for further information or e-mail her at desiree.m.despues@csun.edu. We are always in need of good workers!

A statement from Carrie:

1.To learn the factors that predict successful transition to adulthood of youth with disabilities. Most of us are lucky to be able-bodied people. We are attempting to study the causes of the inequities that people with disabilities face in high school graduation, college participation, social participation, and psychological adjustment. Your contributions helps people with disabilities!

2.To provide students with a research opportunity. This opportunity provides you with knowledge about disabilities and methodology, research-related skills, a letter of recommendation, conference and published papers, and acclimates students to the research process. These skills are invaluable in getting into graduate school as well as in work-related settings.

I realize that we are all very busy. Therefore, it is important that expectations from both sides are clear. If I can do anything for you at all, or you’d like to be involved in the project in another way, please speak with me directly (e-mail is usually the best bet for your first contact). I want to mentor you, but you have to let me know what you need. Please consider me approachable (there are no stupid questions) regarding all aspects of your academic and professional progress including course choice, internships, and others.

ACTIVITY LOG

Thanks for your cooperation with this process! Please use more than one form if needed.

This form is due on the last day of classes of each semester. I recommend that you keep your form with you at all times OR keep it in the lab. We can make a spot where people keep their updated logs.

Categories of “other” — Data entry, data preparation, data analysis, qualitative coding, reading, meeting, library work, training new researchers, helping other researchers (say what kind of help), making telephone calls, participant recruitment, writing paper, presenting research at conference.
