Life History:

Emily and a band of women in the early World War I attempted

to do what had never been done before by any women acting together as

women to enter into international political activity, bringing to birth a new

spirit, a new approach, generating a new reconstructive force in the world.

Emily and the other women were the first in 1914and 1915 to get involved

and stick together.

BACKGROUND:

Emily Greene Balch was born After Civil War, on Jan 8, 1867

in Jamaica,Plains. Then she was raised in a small community in the neighbor-

hood of Bostan. Emily a member of the first graduating class at Byrn Mawr

(Pennsylvania) College, she taught at Wellesely (Massachusetts) College

from 1897. She founded a settlement house in Bostan and served on the

Massachusetts commissions on industrial relations(1908-09) and immigration

(1913-14) and in Bostan city planning board(1914-17). To prepare our

Slavic Fellow Citizens (1910), she lived in Slavic-American neighborhoods

in various cities and travelled to eastern Europe for firsthand knowledge of

the Slavic homelands.

Before Emily in her time her father Francis Vergines Balch was a Bostan

lawyer of distinction and he was a son of a wealthy marine insurance

merchant. Emily got a little of her talent from her father who was a

proper Bostonian. He served as secratory to Senator Charles Sumne.

Emily’s mother Ellen Maria Noyes was a warm loving center of the

large family . There were five sisters and one brother. “The remebered

experience of childhood and near infany may not have for one the mystic

beauty that it had for Wordsworthy or Traherne but very usually it has

a tender and unique charm.” It was very hard for Emily growing up with

a war going on because it was so dangerous. Emily had many siblings

surrounded around her, even though her family was large their family was

very open with things. They had a great relationship and were always

willing to talk. Thats how life came so easy to Emily in her future.

IN-DEPTH:

Emily’s contribution to science was all started by her profession

of becoming a professer in (1913) of political economy and political and

social science. In her career she helped Jane Addams found the Women’s

International League for peace and Freedom. She contributed her life to

all the independent women in the world who fought for many things. In

Emily’s mind helping women fight for what they believe in was what she

lived for.

IMPACT:

The impact back during that time brought birth a new spirit, a new

approach, generating a new reconstructive force in the world. Emily’s im-

pact on women later in that time played a big role more women began to

speak up and they realized that they should get more involved. Other women

began to realize that if they spoke out more maybe they could be apart of

history in the world back then. The impact brought different ideas together

and women closer in the world.

AWARDS:

In 1946 Emily Balch had become the first american women to recieve

the Nobel Peace Prize. She was Presdient of the W.I.L.P.F. and Veteran

of so many Congresses. In 1946, the United States Section had published

a Biographical sketch of Emily Greene Balch of New England, citizen of

the world. Emily recieved in her recongnition Honor and Encouragement.

Emily always encouraged people to do what was best for them and what

was best for other people also.

Emily ended her life in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on January 9, 1961.

She lived a very interesting life and she worked hard to achieve her goals

in life and that is what she wanted women to realize that you can achieve

and do anything you put your mind too.
