Driving Safe Essay, Research Paper

The high accident rate in Israel has always been a problem. People die in vehicle accidents every day, but our government to be more interested in other issues, and fails to solve this problem. It’s a pity that they don’t realize the severity of it. Lives could be saved if the members of our government would stop being so incredibly self-involved with themselves and would get up off their high horse, stop admiring their paychecks, open their eyes and do something.

It seems that more than half the Israeli drivers couldn’t tell a stop sign from a parking meter and many seem to be completely color-blind – many don’t seem to realize that a red light means ’stop’ and a green one means ‘go’. These people are sad. These are the very people that cause accidents on the road.

In order to lower the accident rate on Israel’s roads, several rules

and regulations must be determined:

First and foremost, Driver’s Ed exams should be more difficult and a bit more complex. 30 multiple-choice, fairly easy questions can be a cinch to answer and the chances of a complete idiot achieving a passing grade on the test (26 correct answers or more out of the 30 questions) are way too high. This person who guesses his way to success may grow to be a menace on the road if he manages to pass his driving test as well. The chances of that are slimmer, but still dangerously possible.

Second, driving instructors should be tested more severely before receiving their certificate that indicates their right to a driving instructor’s licence. After all, it’s them who passed all the accident-prone drivers of the past, right?

As much as I don’t want to admit it, the minimum driving age should be raised. This year, the minimum age for a Learner’s Permit was lowered to 16.5 and the minimum age for a full driver’s licence was lowered to 17.5. This was done, as people suspect, to allow teenagers to practise driving before the army, so that they’ll be more experienced drivers when they are drafted. This can help out a great deal and save a lot of trouble later on, but as statistics show; the younger the driver is, the more insecure he is – especially during the last years of adolescence.

A damaged road should be repared on time, and not after an accident has already occured on them. Road lights should be placed on all roads to avoid night accidents.

Awareness – More monitors should be placed in more road junctions to be able to catch every error that a driver may make. Policemen should be more aware of bad drivers and attempt to catch each and every one. Speeding/parking tickets should be issued and fines must be raised. If this happens, drivers will learn to fear being caught and will stop trying to bypass the traffic rules.

And finally, driver’s licence holders should be re-tested every few years. Is this unfair? After all, if a good driver could pass his driving test once, why should he have any problem passing it again? It’s the bad drivers that will fail their second tests and will then be where they belong – off the road.
