Report On The Federalist Paper Essay, Research Paper

The non-United States

The United States was in great danger of being separated after the Revolutionary War. The dangers came from both inside and outside the country. Some of the dangers are as follows.

The first dangers came from outside the country. The powerful nations in the world, like Britain, would have liked nothing more than to see the new nation fall apart. The leaders of the new country had to try and make sure this did not happen and that the United States would stay united and adopt one government. If the country was not united and under one federal government, then Britain would be able to take advantage of the situation in the form of allying with some states and turning the states against each other.

Another way the other nations could interfere with a separated country would have been with the dispute between borders. The bordering States, if any, will be those who, under the impulse of sudden irritation, and a quick sense of apparent interest or injury, will be most likely, by direct violence, to excite war with those nations;… (12) This states that the bordering states would be very likely to engage in a war with another country if America is not united, which would be a horrible thing for that state to do regarding both itself and the rest of the nation.

One of the most dangerous things that could occur if the nation was not united would be the dissention between the states themselves. Regarding the separated states Hamilton says, …the subdivisions into which they might be thrown would have frequent and violent contests with each other. (22) Each state would be free to make their own treaties, trade agreements, and other such things that would spark competition which would undoubtedly lead to wars between the divided states and, ultimately, the end of the entire independent country.

The dangers that come from the other countries and even more so the dangers that come from within the United States itself at that time were the reasons why America needed to be united. United we stand, divided we fall. This quote is the true essence of the situation that faced America at that time. If the states decided to remain separated then the country would have fallen into ruin, but since the idea of one government, one nation united was adopted, the United States was born and the dangers of becoming a non-United States were never even given a chance to arise.
