The reasons for kids to drop out of school have been related
to anxiety. More than 10.9% were intimidated by their
teachers or peers, 16.9% were scared to speak in front of
the class, and 22% said that they felt anxious and/or
nervous at school.
A study conducted by McCaster University found that
more than half of adult panic disorder patients dropped out
of school before graduating. “It’s an issue of
underachievement and missed opportunities. These people have
potential, but because of their anxiety disorder, which we
know starts in their teens, they’re not continuing on in
school.” (Dr. Michael Van Ameringen, Internet)
Dr. Ameringen’s research group has examined selective
serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), including paroxetine
and fluoxetine, as feasible choices for therapies. In a
more recent study, it was found that during a 12 week trial
of 18 patients, paroxetine displayed a 83.3% active rate.
Depression, social anxiety, and social functioning all
lessened with persons taking the drug.
I loved this article! I do not exactly know why it was
interesting, but it was to me. I like writings that affect
my peers. The paper lets me know what goes on with other
people my age.
