They will be back in twenty-five minutes,
But I’ll show them.
I’ll show them that I can do this.
Climb these steps like everyone else. They think I’m decrepit, a burden, old.
Well I’ll climb them.
I walk towards them with my stick.
I look up, 15 maybe 20 steps to climb. I rest my stick upon the first step.
I raise my foot and rest it on the step with my stick.
I concentrate hard on that step
And push, push hard and I’m up. I’m up on the first step,
I can’t believe it.
I feel sure I can do it.
Why, it wasn’t that difficult. I climb the second step,
I can feel my heart pounding,
Then it starts slowing down.
It stops. I drop my stick and fall backwards,
I am lying at the bottom looking up at those steps,
Wishing with all my heart that I won’t die.
I lie there trying to breathe, I can’t, I hear the phone ring.
