THROWAWAYS
In this essay I am going to identify four of the main characters with key
words, then I am going to choose a moment from the book that sums up
each character. Next I will briefly explain the plot.
In Throwaways one of the main characters is Sky. She is very weary of
her little brother,Chip,who forgets about their parents (who have
abandoned Sky and Chip) and gets on with his ?life?.Sky, however,
cannot accept this.
If I were to pick out some key words for Sky they would be: inquisitive,
she asks a lot of questions, and judgement, she doesn?t trust her own
judgement. She mostly relies on Dig her new friend to send her in the right
direction.
Another main character is Chip some of the key words I would use for
him would include: inexperienced, he is too young to understand
everything that goes on around him also content: he is contented with his
life in almost every situation he comes across but of course ,because he is
young, he relies on his big sister.
Also there is Spindor, he is a ?catcher?, he works for the C.P.U (child
protection unit) When Spindor joined the C.P.U he says that he wanted to
help homeless children who were living rough on the streets.
The key word to describe Spindor is good-hearted. He is good-hearted in
the way that he tries to help Sky.
And lastly Dig. Dig is very good to Sky helping her to find her place in the
tip, even though Sky wants to be as far away from the tip as possible.
Dig is very generous because he shares his home with Sky and Chip. He is
also kind to Sky whenever she needed help. He is also practical.
?How could she tell him it wasn?t that simple? That she didn?t trust her
own judgement?(Page 147). I have chosen this quote for Sky because it
shows how unsure of herself she is. For Chip I am going to choose a quote
on page 38, ?Chip nodded happily. Sky could see that he was quite
content with his surroundings.? I chose this because of me saying earlier
about him being contented with his life. For Spindor I chose this ?I want
to use the money to buy a place, right out in the country, where kids like
you, who haven?t been corrupted yet, can get away from all this and make
fresh start.?(page 129) because of how kind he is to Sky. I am choosing
this one for Dig for the same reasons as Spindor how kind and helpful he
is to Sky ?Dig isn?t one of them. Just unlucky. He?s very kind and
helpful.?(page 129).
The plot is basically about two children who get abandoned by their
parents and one of them just wishes that she could make more of her own
choices in life. But when gets the chance to do this she doesn?t like it.
Then they meet Dig, Sky and her younger brother end up on the tip with
Dig making a life as a picker. Forever running from the catchers they live
rough until they meet someone different from all the other catchers,
someone called Spindor. His plan is to buy a house, set right his
conscience and get children off the street.
The main theme of this book is obviously homelessness and children on
the street. The authors message is that there should be less homeless
children and how it isn?t easy living on the streets and more should be
done to help them. I feel the same as the author does that not enough is
being done.
I preferred Stone Cold because it was a better story and it was more
realistic in the fact of homelessness.
