Dear Sir or Madam:
I am writing to comment on the current Food Stamp Program in New York State. I currently work at a Grocery store and see food stamps used to pay for groceries many times. However I find that more and more frequently I see people purchasing candy, potato chips, and other non-necessities needed to prevent hunger. Also after orders are often broken up into two, one they will pay with food stamps and one they will pay with cash. The items that are paid for in cash are usually the necessities that the person or family needs in order to survive. I feel that the program should be changed, so that only foods necessary are purchased with food stamps. Some of these may include, milk, fruit, vegetables, certain cereals, and dinner items. Candy, potato chips, and other types of junk foods and non-necessity foods should be taken out and must be paid in different way than food stamps. However not all abuse their food stamp rights, but its those that do that have stimulated me to write this letter to you. I urge you to change the way food stamps can be used, it s our tax money they are spending.
