Every Saturday college football players line up and dig their cleates and hands into the playing surface. Some playing fields are hard while others are soft, some are bone dry while others are pure mud. There have been some great advances in college football over the years but I think one of the greatest inventions is the creation of Field Turf. Once one look at the advantages of Field Turf over grass it is hard not to agree with the concept that overall Field Turf is the best choice.
The oldest traditional playing surface is grass. Although grass is the most common surface because of it s softer feel which prevents injuries, astroturf is close behind with many positive aspects. Astroturf doesn t wear out like grass does so teams can practice on it year round and not have to worry about ruining the field. Astroturf has a short height and allows player to move faster and be more agile as where in grass it may slow players down or trip them up. When it rains it gets very slick on astroturf as the water has no where to run or seep into but on grass it can be even more slick if the players do not have good or big enough cleates. And when the heat comes grass may have that very humid feeling when you are on it, but when you stand on astroturf it is much hotter due to the fact that all astroturf consists of a thin layer of a layer of plastic needles on top of cement. That cement under astroturf can also cause a lot of injuries that grass would not happen on grass for the near sake that grass absorbs the shock
