The Visiter Essay, Research Paper

The Visiter-(English short story)

It was a black convertable Mercedez 600sel with licence plates “PW2020″. Robert Dupond parked the car in the road outside the American Club. He was still in his car feeling nervous and restless, with a little hesitation. He took a deep breath and got off his car. He could see himself leading a new life with all the money and the power he would inherit from his “Big uncle”. Only the daughter of his “Big Uncle”, Venesa Rosaldi stood in his way. He sensed his heart poundering in his chest, at the same time he became a little excited about the new life he would have at the end of it all. He dreamed of getting everyhing he wanted; a red Ferrari, a brand new mansion in Beverly Hills, and all the beautiful chics.

Venesa was sitting on the terrace in her tennis whites, her blonde hair pulled back from her forehead with a broad white NIKE sweat-band. She was having her usual lime juice with soda water. She always surprised him. Unless you got close enough, she would be mistaken for a woman ten years younger than her real age.

Robert was wearing a maroon double-breasted velvet Gucci suit, a black silk shirt and a pair of wool trousers with slim leather belt. Heads turned as he walked through the lounge with an expressionless face. He put his brief case by the French doors to the terrace and walked outside up to her. She looked up.

‘Did you have a good day?’, she said, as if she was expecting him. He was taken aback, but he tried to stay calm.

‘Just a little sight-seeing, you know how it is.’ He always tried to avoid telling Venesa about the business matters.

what are you doing here?’, she asked. ‘I was test driving my car and I just decided to stop by and say hi to you!’ he replied.

‘How’s father?’, she asked, looking away onto the green tennis courts. For a moment, he considered telling a lie, but he knew that she had already been contacted by the family doctor. He said: ‘ He’s not much better.’

‘But of course, I never thought he would. You want a drink?’. Instead of answering he went inside and poured himself a glass whisky and soda from the bar. He took a slice of lime from the dish and dropped it into the glass. He was desperate to do what he had come to do, and just drive off. But he decided to try enjoying this game of his. ‘How was your tennis?’

‘The usual.’

‘D’you win?’

‘I do not remember. Does it matter?’

He joined her on the white terrace chair. Two red-tailed African parrots squaked in cage at the corner.

‘Has my father got his claws into you?’ she said.

‘Why do you say that?’

She smiled. “You look pale and shaken.’ As soon as she said it, he was worried if he really looked pale.

You talk about him as if he was a monster.

Venesa raised an eyebrow. He does monstrous things. That s why I don t talk to him any more. In fact, I haven t talked to him for years now.

He is still your father.

Venesa studied the crocodile-skin brief case in the doorway.

Is that yours?

Robert felt uneasy, as if she was seeing through it, looking at the “surprise present” that he made just for her.

Oh, I forgot to tell you. Your father told me to give this to you. He said it contained something important, so I suggest not to open it now. He answered without any hesitation.

‘Well, I think I have completed my task, and I better be off. I just wish that you and “Big uncle” would get together sometime in the near future!’

‘ So you are leaving now? Well, I look forward to meeting you again.’

Same here. See you again soon! Take care!’ He made sure that she took the briefcase, and walked casually out of the club.

He was entering the No. 10 highway to the Westwood, when he saw a line of fire engines and the police, followed closely by the ambulance heading towards the club.
