Since the sonnet 73 has an iambic pentameter and the abab cdcd efef gg rhyme scheme, this sonnet has a type of English or Shakespearean. In term of the structure of poem, this poem are quit similar with other Shakespearean poems: it has fourteen lyric of line, and it is divided into three quatrain and one caplet. Analyzing from the stressed and unstressed words, this poem has type of iambic pentameter because the stressed and unstressed words is alternating, and if we sum up all of syllables, they always come up with five pairs; five is stressed and five is unstressed. For example, we can see from the first line of the poem: That time/ of year / thou mayst / in me behold. That, of, thou, in, and be must be pronounced unstressed, on the other hand, time, year, mayst, me, and hold must be pronounced stressed. Furthermore, looking from the words at the end of the lyric, we can know that this sonnet has the abab cdcd efef gg rhyme scheme. The last words in first quatrain, for instance, behold, hang, cold, sang, they have the same pattern of rhymes scheme of abab. The second quatrain, which has ended words of day, west , fire , and lie , has a pattern of cdcd. Furthermore, the third quatrain, which has ended word fire, lie, expire, and by, has a pattern of efef. Finally, the word in caplet long, and strong has a pattern of gg. Through this explanation, it is clear that the sonnet 73 can be categorized as a Shakespearean sonnet.

The first part of Sonnet 73 is divided into three quatrains. The first quatrain, That time of year thou mayst in me behold when yealow leaves,or none, or few, do hang, upon those brought which shake against the cold, bare ruin against the cold, Bare ruined choir where late the sweet birds sang, picture a vivid image of late fall season when there almost no leaf are hanging on the tree and no birds singing. The reason the writer brought this up was to represent his age, which very closed to the point of death. The second quatrain, In me thou see st the twilight of such day as after sunset fadeth in the west, which by-and-by black night doeth take away, death s second sells up all in rest, is a metaphor of himself. He uses the sun position as his aging process. When the sun goes to west and the light of its sun neither dark nor bright, twilight , it s mean that he has already old. However, He views his death as a normal thing such as sleep or rest that need to be done. The third quatrain, in me such see the glowing such fire that on the ashes of his youth doth lie, as the deathbed whereon it must expire, consumed with that which it was nourished by, symbolize the life-will of the writer. He symbolizes his life-will as dim fire. After it has lighted up for so long, it will turn out to be ashes, and it is no longer radiating its light. His will to live is not as energetic as when he was young. Again, All these three quatrains are describing about his position as an old man who are dying.

Lastly, in two lyrics of caplet, the writer gives a conclusion of the entire poem. The two caplet, This thou preceiv st, which make thy love more strong, to love that well which thou ere long, is acting like the climax what the whole poem is all about. In the caplet, the writer has changed dramatically the view of the reader from death to love. The love in the caplet is referred to his friends. As his life is getting old, he expects that his friend should love him even more because he assumes sometimes near in the future, his friend will not be able to meet him again.

According to the type, meter, and rhyme scheme, Sonnet 73 has characteristic of Shakespearean sonnets. Even though the first three quatrains is talking about the death, the poem is ended with a happy ending. As an old man in the first three quatrains, he talks nothing but his death. At the end in the caplet, he gives a new insight how he views his death. His desired to be loved by his friends has changed his view about death from negative side to positive side by relating it with love.
