I witness comedy everywhere I go, I can never escape from comedy. Whether comedy reflects my personality or whether my personality resonates comedy around me, I don t know, but I consider comedy as a reflection of the world they live in. I like to communicate my thoughts and my feelings in a non-serious, frolicsome way. This ever-changing form of art that is comedy leaves an infinite amount of room for interpretation as to what should be considered funny. What I may say is funny to some, while others could see it as just one big pile of nonsense, and not find it funny in the least bit. When you scratch the surface of comedy you discover laughter, when you scratch deeper, you discover meaning. Since comedy reflects my world then it also reflects my personality and my feelings. I usually associate comedy with laughter. Consequently, my first exposure to comedy commenced during the game of peek-a-boo with my parents, which at the time appeared to be the most hysterical game ever. My dad was a master at the game, he conducted that very same game with me for months, maybe even longer, and yet he always manage to squeeze a laugh out of me. Laughing came easy to me; it was one of the things I seemed to do well. That game seems simple enough, someone created it to make little kids laugh, but while I muse over the game now, I see deeper intentions of the game. I see now that my dad showed his love towards me through the game. Every time he would play the game with me was the time he showed his love through laughter, through comedy. To this day, the best times I spend with my dad are when we laugh together at one joke or another. Comedy reminds me of music in many aspects, and not simply because these are two forms of entertainment. I listen to rap and to rock for their rhythm. In my car I beat my thumbs to the beat, I speed up during energetic songs, and slow down during melodic songs. When I watch my favorite television show, Seinfeld, I laugh out loud since the show is very funny, but when I watch a dark comedy, I usually muse to myself over the irony of life. This shows that comedy also has different rhythms, because comedy is not always laugh out loud funny, but it s also thought provoking. In addition, comedy and music are expressions of one s feelings. My music choices always reflect my mood, if I m angry then I ll turn on a heavy rock song, when I m upbeat, then I turn on a rap song. Likewise, the jokes I tell also reflect my mood. For instance, when I m angry my jokes might be at the expense of others, but when I m content then my jokes might simply make light of the generalities. Most importantly, music and comedy have a deeper meaning. Song lyrics often deal with hard issues of racism, love or war. Comedy often targets controversial subjects, which allows us to discuss them without real hesitation. Consequently, comedy and music hold profound meanings in their cores.
Comedy is very basic; I look at comedy as simple observations that we relate to. It s amazing that the amount of news that happens in the world every day always just exactly fits the newspaper, is an observation that we can relate to because we all have seen newspapers. I explain why things like that are funny by one simple statement, it s funny because it s true. Comedy can take on many distinct forms, whether portrayed in films through funny actors or just ironic, serious actors, it s usually surprising. Many comedic plays display a serious tone while incorporating paradoxes that overall exude a comedic tone. An ironical or surprising ending can instantaneously change the mood of the reader, throwing him from heaps of sadness to an unsure smile. This form of comedy allows us to find most of our lives funny, or at least comedic. To find something funny I have to relate to it, I have to find an understanding of the message. During an uncomfortable time I always try to make a joke to ease the tension. When I try to get to know a person better, I always make jokes to discover more about their personality. When I listen to standup comics I always listen to their jokes to detect their view on life. I can always go back and perceive comedy as one dimensional, categorizing it into two categories: what is funny and what is not funny. However, since I have discovered a plethora of other aspects of comedy, I fee obliged to view comedy on many levels. As I listen to the words and their meanings in a song, I listen to the humor and its meaning in a joke, a story, a movie and especially, in my life. Comedy is my rhythm of life.
