Metric System
The Metric System, also known as the System Internationale (SI) was developed in France in 1799. The Metric System was created because the French and English were not in agreement politically, therefore the French did not want anything to do with the English including their system of measurements. The Metric System was developed to perform measurements. The Metric System missed being nationalized in the United States by one vote in the Continental Congress in the late eighteenth, early nineteenth century.
The Metric System was based on the decimal system, meaning by powers of ten. The French made the system decimal because it is easier to convert decimals than fractions. The Metric System uses a set of prefixes in reference to the powers of ten. An advantage to the Metric System verses the English system is the terminology of the Metric System. There are many prefixes that are part of the decimally based system. These prefixes were not created especially for Metric System. To make the units larger and small they add prefixes. The Metric System has basic units. The basic unit of measurement is the meter(m). The basic unit of length is the liter(L). The basic unit of mass is the kilogram(Kg).
