Most adults consider immaturity a negative quality among their peers. At one time or another just about everyone has had the intended insult flung at them, “You’re so immature!” Is immaturity an insult? Hmmmph, how ludicrous. I’ve always looked at immaturity as a positive quality. Here are some reasons why.
Immature people are usually curious, unpredictable, rebellious, have willingness for change, and most importantly display a sense of humor. It is this sense of humor that keeps life in perspective (your most important “sense”). Let me illustrate further with a couple of quotes from Tom Robbins.
“Therefore, if you’re immature you’re still growing, still learning, and questioning conventional concepts. Although in mature circles it’s considered tedious, meddling, trying, and insubordinate.”
It is the atmosphere of immaturity in which change and progress thrive. This is not to suggest immature people are altruistic. They’re far from it. They’re immature solely for Immaturity’s sake (it’s rather fun). I’m certain the writers and artists of the Warner Brothers cartoons were pretty immature. The result? Quality artwork and humor that has stood the test of time. Hence, Daffy Duck was a by-product of immaturity and representative of curiosity, change, and humor. Some rather righteous qualities for a duck with a speech impediment whose philosophy was, “consequences, shmonsequences.”
One advantage of immaturity is easy to understand. Immature people are never asked to do a lot. Many have noticed that people steer away from someone they feel may be immature. The immaturity they posses makes a name for themselves, a name which can be very difficult to shake. Possibly, it is a word which describes the working habits of the person, such as “crappy”. Yet this creates a positive situation for the immature person. They will have a lot of free time on their hands for more of life’s meaningful pleasures. The ideas immature people create tend to be original. Although the immature person thinks with his head, he does not do so in an organized manner. This is why they have so much creativity. By thinking in this fashion, their ideas have a natural tendency to flow more easily, without the interpretations that occur from the editing of thoughts that logical people have normally. It seems that people are always talking about someone else’s immature screw-ups such as your desk tipping over in the middle of English class.
One of the final advantages of being immature is that they are always remembered, even after graduation day. It has been noticed how a quiet person is always hard to detect, and often remains anonymous. I think the mind has a hard time keeping quiet people in its memory track. However, it is much easier and pleasing for the mind to remember someone really immature and stupid. Another quote that ties in with immaturity is a quote Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
” At sixteen, the adolescent teen knows about suffering because he himself has suffered, but he barely knows that other beings also suffer.”
Thus immaturity clearly has many advantages. It is important to understand that immature people are like all other humans physically. Yet because of the difference between mature and immature people, mature human beings need to give them some breathing space. Everybody needs to learn that someone graced with immaturity deserves more respect. An immature person is perpetually growing, changing, questioning, learning, and keeping things in perspective with a sense of humor. I hope I have taught you that it’s not so bad to call yourself an immature person. After all, we are special.
