The soul selects its own society just as two citizens must choose between being an extension of the law or concealing some incriminating evidence and Eveline chooses to abandon her exciting life and remain with the family that needs her. Susan Glaspell presents a dilemma in which Mrs. Wright has chosen to respond to her husband’s manipulation.
James Joyce presents us with an Irish female protagonist who has chosen to rebel against her father and sail off to another continent for excitement and the anticipated love of a man that she barely knows. Emily Dickenson reveals truth that makes her seem snobbish, but in a truth in which we all share. Eveline had a choice but felt she was between a rock and hard spot. “Eveline explores the degree to which the individual identities of the Irish female protagonists have been shaped by their social and cultural environments.”
Trifles uses choice in how the men and women are divided. The men chose to stay together doing their investigation. The women, Mrs. Hale and Mrs Peters, made a choice when they discovered the bird . They decided to keep it between themselves even though Mrs. Hale was married to a low enforcer, as George Henderson said, ” No, Mrs. Peters doesn’t need supervision. For that matter a sheriff’s wife is married to the law.” Then the sheriff remark, ” Married to the law.”. Mrs. Wright probably did not feel that she made any choices at all because her husband made them for her. It was he that decided that she did not need to sing or that she had the right to enjoy the company of her bird. Mrs. Wright, therefore, suffered due to her passive choices.
” The Soul Selects its own Society” is all about choices. It explores all of us and how we make choices. We are our own private society and we determine who is going to enter our network. Those people we call friends, relatives and acquaintances are in our society and each one of them has his own kingdom with his own society and thereby determines who will enter his.
. The fact is that we all choose who may enter our world and who may not- who we let in and who we keep out. Emily, Mrs. Wright, Mrs. Hale, Mrs Peters, and Eveline all made choices that lead to deep social and morale ramification.
