Dose Of Reality Essay, Research Paper

Theresa ran into the bathroom and dug through her purse in search of the one thing that would make all her pain go away. As she hid in the bathroom stall, she wondered how her life had come to this. She was crumpled up on the bathroom floor sticking a needle into her arm. Her life had been good. She had to admit she had been blessed. She came from a family of good standing. She had had every thing she could every want. So why her? Why did this have to be her life? She couldn’t understand.

She finally snapped back to reality and realized she was going to be late for class. She pulled herself up and rushed out of the bathroom to her next class. As she ran into the room, the bell rang. Every one was staring at her and snickering. She knew they talked about her. Even her so-called best friend Tiffany had ditched her. As Theresa took her seat at the back of the room, a girl up front of the room snickered. Theresa wears a sweater every day, even when its 100 degrees out. Theresa looked around and quickly pushed her sleeves a little way up her arm.

As her Economics class began, her mind began to wander to James and their last night together. The night had been wonderful. She remembered that he took her out to the beach to eat a picnic dinner. As they lay in each other’s arms they watched the sunset on the water. She wanted this feeling to last forever. She didn’t think she could ever feel more happiness than this. That is until the moment that James took out the ring and asked her to marry him. He told her that he loved her and he wanted to be with her forever. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She was shocked. She said yes.

That night, he dropped her off at her house at 12:20 ten minutes before her curfew. As she got ready for bed and lay down to sleep all she could think about was what it would be like spending the rest of her life with him. She fell asleep content.

The next morning she had the worst feeling. She couldn’t understand. So she called James’s house. It was busy so she figured that his mom or sister were on the phone so she just put the feelings aside. She walked back to the bedroom, turned on the TV, and got a towel to take a shower. Just as she walked into the bathroom she heard it.

“Last night at 12:30 a young man by the name of James Obeney got into a serious accident on Adamsville Rd. He was in a head on collision with a drunk driver. When the paramedics arrived on the scene he was pronounced dead.”

She blocked out the rest. She couldn’t believe it. This couldn’t happen to her. She loved him. They were supposed to be getting married. He couldn’t die. The bell rang. The sound knocked her out of her trance-like state. She wanted to cry for the memory but she didn’t have the energy.

She fell into a bad state of grief after he died. She wouldn’t talk to anyone. She also started going to parties wild parties where she would find people who were in just as much pain as she was. She met some new friends. They introduced her to heroin, and told her that they have used for a long time. It did help, it made all the pain go away. They got her hooked. She thought they were her friends, but they weren’t. They took her money and once they got what they wanted from her, they called her weak and sorry. They didn’t associate with her anymore. Now she had nothing left but holes in her arms and an aching in her heart that would never go away.

She pulled into the driveway of her house. She drove the new Mercedes that her parents had bought her for (as they said) being so strong though everything. As she parked she saw a police car. A wave of panic swept over her. It made her want to turn back, but she knew she couldn’t. It was finally time to face reality. She had a problem and she needed help. She got out of the car and walked up the steps. The door suddenly flew open. (Her mother) With tears in her eyes, reached for her hand and led her to the living room. Where there was a police officer and a counselor. Through all her fear, Theresa suddenly felt relieved and happy. She was finally going to be free from the pain that constantly enveloped her. She knew it would take lots of hard work, but in her mind and in her heart this was something she wanted. She would do any thing to achieve it.
