Banned

Censorship is the supervision and control of the information and ideas that are circulated among the people within society. Censorship refers, in this situation to the examination of books in our school curriculum, for the purpose of altering, or suppressing parts thought to be objectionable, or offensive.

Based on the article, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was banned because of its poor use of grammar, the racist words, the racial epithets and the racial violence throughout out the novel. Another concern is how these (problems) will effect the students reading it. Another reason being the Civil War had just ended. This meant that reconstruction was disintegrating, racial violence was escalating, and segregation restricted the blacks a right to vote. This shows us the American society of the 1800 s were more concerned with the international relationship between Huck and Jim than the racial issues.

People in this day and age oppose reading Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in schools today because of the poor use of grammar, racial slang and actions not appropriate for school aged kids. It also challenges what people think, that racism is no longer a problem in the United States today. This shows that our current society isn t really confident that racism is still a problem concerning the U.S today. It also shows that we care more about the effects on students reading this and the effect it could have on them and the society of today. In the1800 s when Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published the society from ours of today differed in some ways. They differed because the society of the 1800 s still had racism present, they didn t want to start controversies, so they banned it from the libraries and bookstores. Today s society is more concerned about the effects it will have on the students reading it, in life, and in school (literature).

I think this quote means if the U.S would have abolished racism and slavery when it first started to rise, this book wouldn t be such a hard book to be taught and read. This book is a hard book to read because it has a lot of slang used throughout it that isn t in school-aged kids vocabulary. This vocabulary then needs to be explained to them so they will understand the novel. This would also be hard to teach because you would have to ask the students if they would be offended by reading this, and if they are you would have to substitute in slaves , or black people . This is a hard book to read because of all the slang used and you have to comprehend all of it, which is sometimes hard.

I personally feel that censorship on books about our history of the U.S shouldn t be looked over or examined because of offensive grounds. This novel tells about the history of slavery and how it was dealt with and handled, in the time when Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was written. This is apart of history that can t be changed, and yeah, sure, people will get offended, but they re only human. You can t change our history and make it sound like cherry pie, because some people can t read a couple words.
