Everybody goes through at least one in their lifetime: the bumps in the road that slow you down and make it hard to go on, but you have to continue through all the hard times. When you think life is going really well and nothing can go wrong, it manages to throw a big obstacle in your path and ruin the way things are going. Both the doctor and I have seen these kinds of obstacles in our lives, and a person must learn to deal with the problems to be able to deal with life in general. While the bumps are different for everybody, somehow you must learn to absorb them and not allow them to slow you down. It is knowing how to cope with the bumps that lets you be able to live life to its fullest.

When the indoor ramp park opened in Thorsby, I was in there using the ramps the first day. I wanted to progress so fast, and I was anxious to learn some cool, new tricks. I learned how to roll in from the big quarter pipes, which was my first big accomplishment. After I learned to roll in, I was being very tempted to try jumping the spine, a ramp made up of two quarter pipes back to back. One day, after school, I was over at the park and decided to try the spine. I rolled in from the top of one of the quarter pipes at the end, got enough speed, and ramped over the spine. My first attempt was just about a failure, as I landed on my back wheel instead of both at the same time. I barely rode out of it. I returned to the top of the quarter pipe in the corner, regained my confidence and guts, and tried again. This time, as I was starting my roll in, I had a pretty good idea that I was going to land this one well; I had been told by one of the riders that was better than me that once you had jumped the spine once, you learn to adapt to it so that you know what to do. I got my speed up and rode toward the spine. As I hit the bottom of the ramp, I was feeling good, and there was no turning back now. I got airborne, my front tire got a little too high, and as I was on the way down, my back tire was the first to hit the ramp. My bike decided to run out from underneath me and I could not get my feet of the pedals fast enough. I landed on my back with the bike on top of me, winding myself badly and giving me a sore back. That was on about January 15, and to this day, I have not tried jumping it again, but I am seriously considering it. It is knowing that I can surmount my fears and overcome this large obstacle at the skatepark that keeps me riding my bike.

The doctor was new at his job, and his first case was a hard one to conquer. He arrived at the isolated village by snowmobile and the instant that he embarked on the journey that was his first case, he wanted to make a good impression of himself. He had a shiny new bag and hunted for the label of prestigious and proper. He was taking things a little too seriously, but he had to learn to cope. The beginning of his torment started when he left the store and began to be shadowed by a pig. He thought he could lose the pig, and picked up his pace, walking a little faster. He felt distressed as the pig was following him, and thought about how bad he would look if he showed up at his patient s house with a pig behind him. He looked back and this time instead of one pig, there were four! He quickened his pace again, feeling very uneasy about his situation, and he thought about how unintelligible he would look if he showed up at his patient s house with four pigs behind him. When the doctor did arrive at his patient s house, he was very distraught and was worrying about his reputation-gone-bad because of a number of grimy animals. He knocked on the door and was received with utmost courtesy, and was taken in like any normal person; the pigs entirely ignored.

It was the doctors persistence with the pigs that allowed him to continue on, and if it hadn t have been for the doctors confidence in himself he would be back at the store trying to find a way back out of town. It is also my persistence that is allowing me to continue to ride my bike, even though I know that I will someday hurt myself again, but I will just shake it off and keep going, because persistence is a virtue and without it life is boring, monotonous, and pointless. You just have to keep going when the bumps in the road slow you down, or you become just another bump for someone else to hit.
