LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD; ADAPTED FROM

A TREASURY OF CHILDREN?S LITERATURE

Cast of Characters:

Mother

Wolf

Little Red Riding Hood

Grandmother

Wood cutter

(EARLY ONE MORNING, LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD?S MOTHER BAKED SOME CAKES AND OTHER SWEETS IN HER KITCHEN AS LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD WATCHED. SHE BACKED SOME CAKES AND BUTTER IN A SMALL BASKET AND ASKED LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD TO TAKE IT TO HER GRANDMOTHER.)

MOTHER:(SMILING) Your grandmother has been quite ill. I want you to take this basket of cakes

and butter to her.

L.R.R.H:(HAPPILY) Ok, mom.

MOTHER:(STRAIGHTENING LRRH?S CAP) And remember not to stray from the path or you might get

lost in the woods.

L.R.R.H:I won?t mom, I promise. I?ll call you when I get to grandma?s house.

MOTHER:Ok dear, say hello to grandma for me. Now run along.

(SHE HAD NOT GONE FAR WHEN SHE MET THE BIG BAD WOLF LEANING AGAINST A TREE LOOKING AT L.R.R.H., BUT SHE WAS NOT AFRAID.)

L.R.R.H:Good morning wolf. How are you this morning?

WOLF:(WITH A MYSTERY LOOK ON HIS FACE) And good morning to you, where are you going in

such a hurry?

L.R.R.H:Oh, I?m on my way to my grandmother?s house. I?m taking her this basket of cakes.

She lives over there on the other side of the wood.

WOLF: (WALKING BESIDE RED RIDING HOOD) Why are you walking so fast? Take a look around the

wood. It?s so beautiful. (PAUSE) Listen to the bird sing. (POINTING) And look at all

the pretty flowers.

L.R.R.H:Hmm, you are right. Grandmother would be happy if I brought her some flowers.

Besides, it is still early. Thanks Mr. Wolf.

WILF:(SMILING) No problem child. Bye and have fun!

(RED RIDING HOOD RAN INTO THE WOOD AND PICKED FLOWERS WHILE WOLF MADE HIS WAY TO GRANDMOTHER?S HOUSE.)

WOLF:(KNOCK,KNOCK)

GRANDM:(SURPRISED) Who?s there?

WOLF:(SQUEAKING) iii it?s me, Little Red Riding Hood. I brought you something to eat.

Open the door.

GRANDM:Come in, the door is open. I am too weak to get up!

WOLF:(WHISPERING) Ha-ha, one nice meal.

(WOLF RAN INSIDE, UP TO GRANDMOTHER?S ROOM AND GOBBLED HER UP, PUT ON HER NIGHT GOWN, NIGHTCAP AND JUMPED INTO BED WAITING FOR LITTLE RIDING HOOD LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD REALIZED SHE HAD TO BE AT GRANDMOTHER?S HOUSE STOPPED PICKING AND TROT TO GRANDMOTHER?S HOUSE)

L.R.R.H:(SURPRISED TO SEE THE DOOR OPEN) Hmm, the door is wide open. (LOOKING AROUND)

Grandma! It?s me Little Red. Are you here? (PAUSE) She must be in her room.

(SHE WALK TO GRANDMOTHER?S BEDROOM, AND PAUSE, WALK TO THE PHONE)

L.R.R.H:Oh, I have to call mom. (DIALING) Hi mom, I am at grandma?s house.

MOTHER:How?s grandma?

L.R.R.H:I don?t know. I just got here. I think she is in her room sleeping.

MOTHER:All right dear. Go see your grandmother. Call me if you need help.

L.R.R.H:Ok mom, bye.

(L.R.R.H. HANG UP THE PHON AND WENT TO GRANDMOTHER?S ROOM)

L.R.RH:Oh, grandma, what big ears you have. You didn?t have this big ears before.

WOLF:Well, I?m old now, my dear. I need them to hear you better.

L.R.R.H:But grandma, you have big scary eyes.

WOLF:My vision is getting bad, I need to see you better.

L.R.RH:But grandma, what big hand you have?

WOLF:These big arms are better to hug you with.

L.R.R.H:Ooh, grandma, what big ugly teeth you have?

WOLF:Well sweaty, these teeth are better to eat you with.

(WOLF SPRANG OUT OF BED AND SWALLOWED LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD, WENT BACK TO BED AND FELL ASLEEP. WOODCUTTER CAME BY GRANDMOTHER?S HOUSE.)

WOODC:(LOOK CURIOUS) Hmm, that?s unusual. The door?s wide open. I?d better check on

the old woman. I hope she?s all right. (WENT INSIDE) Ah ha, I?ve got you at last,

you old rascal! (WALK TOWARD THE BED ABOUT TO PUNCH WOLF AND

STOP) Wait a minute. This old rascal has eaten the old woman. I have to do

something. ( LOOKING AROUND THINKING WHAT TO DO) Oh yeah, I?ll 911.

(WOODCUTTER WENT TO THE PHONE AND CALL 911)

WOODC:(DIALING) Hello, I need some help. I think this wolf ate the old lady.

911:Ok sir, calm down and listen carefully. I want you to pick the wolf up and do hymick

WOODC:Ok. (PICKING THE WOLF UP AND DO HYMICK MANEUVER)

(AT THE COUNT OF THREE, WOLF REGURGITATE THE OLD LADY AND L.R.R.H WOLF LYING ON THE FLOOR STILL FEELING SICK?)

WOODC:(WENT TO PHONE) Hello, the old lady and her granddaughter is out from wolf?s

stomach.

911:Good job, sir. Thanks for calling. Bye.

(WOODCUTTER WENT BACK TO WOLF, SHOOK HIM, RAISED HIS HAND TO PUNCH HIM BUT WOLF WOKE UP.)

WOLF:(SCARED) Please don?t hurt me!

WOODC:(STILL HOLDING WOLF DOWN ON THE FLOOR) If I see you go near these

people or anyone again, I will take you to jail and lock you up.

WOLF:(SCARED) I promise I won?t come near them or anyone again.

(WOLF GOT SCARED AND RAN AWAY)

L.R.R.H:(SMILING) Thank you Mr. Grandma I was so scared in there.

GRANM:Bless you boy. Let?s have some cake.

(WOODCUTTER AND LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: MMM-MMM

THE END

I picked this age group because:

n More of the story can be carried by the dialogue. Therefor, in my script there are dialogues between Little Riding Hood, her mother, grandmother, Wolf, Woodcutter and the 911 in order to make it interesting to this particular age group.

n Enjoys speculation about the “how” of stage occurrences.
