What is necessary for humans to live at peace with each other? As we reflect on history, we can find that people use different ways to live at peace achieve harmony with one another. The word peace is a small word with a big meaning. Peace is freedom from or stopping of war. Peace is a treaty or argument agreement to end war or the threat of war. But the question is, what is necessary for humans to living at peace with one another? Reaching an agreement or compromise with a person is an important key to live at peace with one another. In society, we have several ways to accomplish this goal through killing, reservations, plantations, making people slaves, or through treaties. History has demonstrated humanity s inhumane actions toward humanity. Throughout history, we have a race of people who has been a dominant race, and the other races have been the slaves or workers. Through reading from Three Dirges , by Marshall Bennett Connelly, it put me in the mind of how people treated the North American Indians in the 1800 s and 1900 s. Imagine this, you One is are teaching an Indian how to read. You The teacher knows if you he/she gets caught, then you he/she will die. What will you that teacher do? Will you he/she teach the Indian how to read or would you the teacher let him live in society as a dumb lower class individual? This was a hard decision for some people to make. Some people rejected peace and living in harmony with one another. Some people wanted to destroy the Indians or wanted to make them as their slaves. Some people figured that if they taught the Indians how to read or write, then they the Indians [vague reference] would become smart and wise enough to run away. They felt that they the settlers [vague reference] would be inferior if the Indians learned how to read and write. There were other people who wanted to help the Indians learn the value of an education and how an education can help them survive in the world. Even though, they knew if they were caught what will happen to them, it was a chance they were willing to take. Education is an important key for living in peace. Through education, you people learn how different cultures think and live. You These learners learn how to do things and how to survive. Through education, you people learn important keys to life. This is what some people did with the Indians. They began to learn their culture and new things that they did not know before. But the question still remains, What is Necessary for Humans to Live at Peace With One Another?
Communication also plays an important role for humans to live at peace with one another. As I was reading Three Dirges , I learned that communication was not only a way of life, but it was a way to survive. Think about this, in the story, Mr. Connelly showed us the value of communication. The Indian people had their own language, and the white man , had their own language, but the emotions, feelings, and facial expressions were the same in any language. For example, in the passage, it states, that the commander told Don Lazaro to, Sit Down . The Indian reaction was, The Indian dropped his eyes to the chair beside him, looked back at the colonel, and gingerly took a seat on the front edge if the chair (Connelly). As you can see, The Indian reaction tells us that his feelings were hurt. Colonel Guzman s reaction tells us that he was expressing his role as a commander in charge. Even if they spoke different languages, they understood one another through the tone of their voices and their reactions. This is the way the white man treated the Indians. They Many talked down to the Indians, instead of, talking to them with respect and dignity that the Indians deserved. The Indians were humans also. Communication brings understanding. But the question still remains, What is Necessary for Humans to Live at Peace With One Another?
Another key that is necessary for humans to live at peace with one another is love. Love is a little word with a powerful meaning. Love is a word that comes and goes, but few people really know what it really means to love somebody. Mr. Connelly shows us through his writing the pain and agony that people have for someone who they really love and care for. In the story, Don Lazaro told the parents of the five boys what Colonel Guzman will do to the young men, If those subversives aren t dead by sunrise tomorrow morning, my troops will come to Comitan, and by noon they will kill every living thing in the town and burn it to the ground, and then before nightfall they will do the same thing to Santa Maria Petzl, to Santa Luz, and to every other subversive town in Soloia! (Connelly) Imagine someone is telling you a parent that you he/she have has to kill you re his/her child or else they are going to kill your child everyone in the village. Either way you one looks at it, you the child has to die. How would you feel? The parents exchanged looks of terror and anger. The women began to moan and wail. (Connelly) You It is easy to see can see how much the parents love their children. They are willing to do anything to protect their children. They are even willing to die for their children. That is real love. Real love is something that is worth fighting for. This is what the Indians did. They fought for what they believed in.
As we continue to live in society, we must always remember the important necessitates for life. Remember, What is Necessary for Humans to Live at Peace With One Another? Education, communication, and love are important for us to live together in peace and harmony. If we stop and realized that we come from the same God, we have many things in common, and that all men are created equal , this will be a better world. Remember, the only thing that is different is the color of our skin. If we as society, focus on the content of our character, instead of the color of our skin, we will be a better world. As the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would say, I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content if their character . We also need to understand other people needs and thoughts. Our dream should be the same as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. s which is

With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
When we have this faith, then we can one day we will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the Old Negro spiritual, Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!
